The following list does not attempt to include all schools of higher learning in China, nor does it evaluate fields of study. However, it is a comprehensive list of universities in China, with a numerical ranking relating to the order in which the China government describes them (#1equals top rank).

FudanUniversity is a famous comprehensive university in China. It consists of seventeen schools with 66 departments, and 4 independent departments: Physics, Chemistry, Macromolecular Science, and Environmental Science and Engineering. The University confers bachelor's degrees in 68 academic disciplines, and master's degrees in 209 disciplines (with 38 of them established by the University itself), and doctoral degrees in 22 Level I and 135 Level II academic disciplines (with 24 of them established by the University itself). There are also 29 research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships.

Nanjing University, one of China's comprehensive universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. Nanjing University is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Presently, NJU consists of 21 schools with 59 departments. It runs 78 undergraduate programs, 213 master’s programs, 9 professional master’s programs, 147 Ph.D. programs (under 23 primary disciplines), and 23 post-doctoral research stations.
NJU has ranked first for seven consecutive years for the number of research papers by NJU faculty and students in the Science Citation Index, and for eight years for articles cited by international academic circles.

Nankai University is a public university in Tianjin, China. It is among the most famous universities in China. Founded in 1919 by renowned patriotic educationist Zhang Boling (1876-1951) and Yan Fansun (1860-1920), Nankai University is a member of the Nankai serial schools. It is the alma mater of the former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai.
Nankai University is a research-oriented school focusing on scientific and technological innovation and economic and social development.

Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan"-- the gardens of Yan, is situated at the northeast of the Haidian District at the western suburbs of Beijing. The University consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments, with 93 specialties for undergraduates,2 specialties for the second Bachelor's degree, 199 specialties for Master candidates and 173 specialties for Doctoral candidates. While still laying stress on basic sciences, the university has paid special attention to the development of applied sciences.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is jointly run by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality. It is located in Shanghai.
Today SJTU boasts 20 academic schools: the schools of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Mechanical & Power Engineering, Electronics & Electric Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Sciences, Life Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Science, Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Management , International and Public Affairs, Foreign Languages, Agriculture and Biology, Environmental Science and Engineering , Pharmaceutics, Medical, Law, Media & Design, Micro-electronics, Information Security and Software. There are two directly affiliated departments: Department of Plastic Technology and the Department of Physical Education, plus a Graduate School. SJTU also operates Schools of Continuing (adult) Education, Online Learning, and International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 152 masters-degree programs, 93 Ph.D. programs, 16 post-doctorate programs, 16 “state” doctorate programs and 14 “state” laboratories and national engineering centers. SJTU boasts a good number of famous scientists and professors, including 22 academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 31 "Changjiang Chair Professors" and more than 1, 420 professors and associate professors.

Shanxi University, locating in Shanxi Province, was founded on May 8th, 1902. Shanxi University is currently the sole comprehensive university in Shanxi Province with a range of academic fields covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine and management. Its education programs extend to 66 specialties for undergraduates and 18 specialties for the double bachelor's degree. At present, it has 137 general Masters of Arts / Masters of Sciences (M. A. / M. S.) programs, 6 specialized M. A. / M. S. programs, 48 doctorate programs and 4 centers for post-doctoral studies. Among these many programs, philosophy of Science and Technology and Quantum Optics are designated as state key programs and 20 others are designated as provincial key- or key- constructing programs.

At present, SCU has the widest coverage of disciplines and the largest scale of operation in West China. There are 15 key disciplines at the national level, 14 “211 Project” key construction disciplines, and 29 key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial level, 4 national bases for personnel training in basic disciplines and scientific research, and a teaching base for engineering courses. In addition, it has 12 first-class disciplines to grant Doctor’s degree and Master’s degree, 111 second-class disciplines to grant Doctor’s degrees, 178 Master programs, 6 specialized degree programs, and 16 post-doctor stations.

Southeast University (SEU), located in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is one of the first universities accredited by the State Council to determine and approve the qualifications of professors, associate professors and doctorial supervisors. It is also one of the universities of Project 211 and Program 985 that is financed by the central government to create a world-class university. Southeast University offers schoolsanddepartments for science, engineering, art, social sciences, law, economics, management, languages, etc., with engineering as its focus.

 Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) was founded at Shanhaiguan in 1896 as the Imperial Chinese Railway College. It is now located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The University has three campuses: the main Xipu campus, the Jiulidi campus in downtown Chengdu, and Emei campus about 90 miles to the southwest of the city snuggled at the foot of the Mount Emei, one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. The university offers programs at the graduate and undergraduate level to approximately 60,000 students.
SWJTU pays great attention to international exchanges and cooperation, and has now established good collaboration relationships with over 70 universities of 50 countries and states.

USTC is a new type of university established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) after the founding of the “New China”.  The University aims at developing high-level expertise in science and technology considered essential to the national economy, national defense construction, and education in science and technology.  Founded in Beijing in 1958, USTC was moved to Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province during 1970.
USTC has 9 schools and 23 departments. In the field of Education it offers a Special Class for the Gifted Young, Experimental Class for Teaching Reform, Graduate School, School of Management (Beijing), Software School, School of Network Education, and a School of Continuing Education. The University offers 43 undergraduate specialties, 17 “first-category” Ph.D. degree programs, 89 “second-category” Ph.D. degree programs, and 105 “second-category” master degree specialties. USTC also boasts 3 professional master degree specialties: MBA, MPA and Master of Engineering and 17 post-doctoral mobile stations and 45 specialties for the post-doctoral mobile stations. The University is the primary source of post-doctoral study within the Academy of Sciences.

In September 1998, a new Zhejiang University was established on the basis of the amalgamation of four former universities: Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University, all of which were located in the garden city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

Zhejiang University is a comprehensive university whose fields of study cover 11 branches of learning, namely philosophy, literature, history, education, science, economics, law, management, engineering, agriculture and medicine. The university now has 112 specialties for undergraduate studies, and it is entitled to confer master’s degrees in 317 programs and doctoral degrees in 283 programs. Under its administration there are 14 National laboratories, 2 National Engineering Research Centers and 3 National Engineering Technology Centers. In addition, it has set up 35 national specialties and 43 post-doctor stations.
